Preaching is Easier than Practicing

- James Guimaraens

My eldest son, Sebastian, recently joined the ranks of the employed, having qualified in 2025. I was now faced with the reality of helping him make sense of the frankly overwhelming number of important decisions ahead of him: medical aid, life cover, retirement savings, financial management, and budgeting.

Now in its third year, the list recognises the advisers setting the standard for financial advice in South Africa. Citywire received 165 submissions this year, with each financial services provider limited to three. We put forward three names, and all three made the list.

Advisers were assessed across six areas, covering their financial planning and investment processes, practice management, innovation, community involvement, and transformation and mentorship. The breadth of those measures matters. Strong advice depends on technical knowledge, and equally on sound judgement, a well-run practice and a willingness to invest in the future of the profession.

We are proud to help our clients stay disciplined through uncertain markets, structure portfolios for tax efficiency and cashflow, and steer clear of emotional decisions that erode wealth over time. Done consistently over many years, it is what makes the difference for our clients.

Citywire’s report also notes a broader shift in South African financial advice towards higher professional standards and practices built to serve clients across generations. We see the same shift in our own business. Three names on one list shows that good advice at Sterling is a standard held across the team.

The final Top 50 spans different business models, specialities and career paths. According to Citywire, what unites every adviser on it is a commitment to improving their clients’ financial lives.

Congratulations to Graydon, Ari and Janet on recognition that is well earned. To our clients, thank you for the trust that makes this work possible.
